SOMES ISLAND TRIP
Matiu/Somes Island Scientific and Historic Reserve is a tranquil retreat for wildlife and visitors alike. Maori have occupied this island for generations. In more recent times, Matiu/Somes Island has served as a human and animal quarantine station, an internment camp, and a military defence position.
The Somes Island ferry will depart Queens Wharf at 10 a.m (this is near where the Dockside Restaurant & Bar is located). There are various options for return, at either 12.50, 1.40, or 3.20 p.m. The fare is $21.Bookings and payment for the trip will be via registration site.
The group should assemble about 9.45 a.m. on the wharf just north of The Loaded Hog, where the ferry leaves from. Note this point is about 100 m north of the Queens Wharf Gates.
VISIT TO TE PAPA'S INSECT COLLECTION
The Te Papa insect collection is particularly strong in beetles, butterflies, moths, lice, fleas, stick insects, springtails, cicadas, wētā, spiders, harvestmen, and water bears. It includes about 1100 primary types - the original specimens on which published descriptions of a species are based - within an estimated 600,000 specimen lots. Te Papa houses the Hudson Collection, which is perhaps the best private insect collection ever made in New Zealand. It contains several thousand dry mounted insects collected mostly by George Vernon Hudson (1867-1946), but also by his wife, his daughter, and by other entomologists of that time.
